Crop-Specific Substrates

Engineered for Canadian Crops

Every grow bag blend is formulated for the specific drainage, aeration, and water-retention demands of each crop and Canadian growing region.

Greenhouse Tomatoes & Peppers

Ontario's greenhouse belt produces the majority of Canada's tomatoes and peppers. Our coarse chip-to-pith blend delivers the high Air Filled Porosity (AFP) needed for intensive drip irrigation cycles without root rot — season after season.

Hydroponic Strawberries

BC's Fraser Valley and Ontario's greenhouse sector are Canada's fastest-growing strawberry regions. Pre-buffered, low-EC coir delivers stable pH and superior moisture management — essential for berry root zones and higher brix levels.

Licensed Cannabis Production

Canada's regulated cannabis industry demands precision. Our triple-washed substrate with EC <0.5 mS/cm gives Canadian LPs and micro-cultivators a clean, inert baseline for full nutrient programme control — from veg through late flower.

Cucumbers & Sweet Peppers

Greenhouse cucumbers demand consistent moisture access without waterlogged roots. Our "Cucumber Blend" — higher pith ratio for moisture retention with structural coir chips for drainage — prevents drought stress during peak Ontario summer production.

Why choose Avee over other coco coir suppliers in Canada?

Most Canadian coco coir sellers are resellers — they import, markup, and ship. Avee is the manufacturer. We process in Pollachi, India, triple-wash, calcium-buffer, lab-test, and ship to our Ontario warehouse. No middleman. Lower cost, full traceability, and direct customisation.

  • Factory-direct pricing — significantly lower than Canadian resellers
  • Batch EC and pH documentation with every commercial order
  • Custom bag specs: blend, dimensions, drain holes, dripper placement
  • Ontario warehouse — 24–48 hr delivery to Leamington and Niagara
  • Sample pallets available before full season commitment
What is the difference between coco coir grow bags and open top bags?

Coco Coir Grow Bags are fully sleeved — the compressed coir slab sits inside a sealed UV-treated polythene bag. You make planting slits and dripper holes yourself. Preferred for smaller operations or where bag handling flexibility matters.

Open Top Grow Bags have no top seal — the coir surface is open to air, maximising evaporation and dry-down speed. Ideal for high-wire tomato and cucumber production where crop steering is critical. See our Open Top Bags →

Do I need to do anything before using your grow bags?

Minimal prep. Our bags are shipped compressed and dry. To activate:

  • Place bag on your gutter rail and locate your drain holes
  • Connect drippers and run a full saturation irrigation until run-off EC is stable
  • Check run-off EC — should be <1.0 mS/cm with our pre-buffered coir
  • Set planting slits and plant directly — no flushing typically required

Cannabis growers: Run one initial 30-minute soak at your target nutrient EC before planting to verify the substrate baseline.

How many grow bags do I need per Canadian greenhouse hectare?

Typical Canadian commercial greenhouse densities:

  • Beefsteak tomatoes: 2.5–3 plants/m² → ~25,000–30,000 bags per hectare
  • TOV / cocktail tomatoes: 3–3.5 plants/m² → ~30,000–35,000 bags per hectare
  • Sweet peppers: 3–4 plants/m², 2 plants per bag → ~15,000–20,000 bags per hectare
  • Cucumbers: 1.5–2 plants/m² → ~15,000–20,000 bags per hectare
  • Strawberries: 8–12 plants/m², 4–6 per bag → ~15,000–25,000 bags per hectare

Can I reuse coco coir grow bags for a second Canadian season?

Yes — coco coir grow bags can typically be reused for 2–3 seasons, dramatically reducing substrate cost versus rockwool or single-use media. Between crops:

  • Remove old root mass — mechanical shaking or manual extraction
  • Apply enzyme solution (Cannazym, Hygrozyme) — allow 24–48 hrs
  • Flush with clean water until run-off EC drops below 1.0 mS/cm
  • Re-test EC and pH — target <1.0 mS/cm and pH 5.5–6.5
  • Optional: light calcium re-buffer to restore cation exchange sites
Do you ship coco coir grow bags during Canadian winter?

Yes — we ship year-round, including January and February. Compressed grow bags are shipped at controlled moisture content — freeze-resistant and storable in unheated warehouses through Prairie winters.

Many greenhouse operators place fall pre-season bulk orders to lock in pricing. Best rates available August through October.
