Why Growers Choose Avee Loose Coir Pith

Ready to use. No hydration wait. Maximum flexibility.

Loose pith trades the compactness of a block for instant usability — open the bag and you're already planting.

01
READY IMMEDIATELY

No hydration wait

Unlike compressed blocks that need 20–30 minutes to expand, our loose coir is pre-expanded and ready straight from the bag. No mixing equipment, no wait time, no guesswork — just fill and plant.

02
LOW EC

Guaranteed below 0.5 mS/cm

Every bag is triple-washed and buffered at source, then lab-tested before shipping. Low EC means you start your nutrient program on a clean slate — no salt flush needed. Lab documentation is available on request.

03
HIGH CEC

Holds nutrients in the root zone

Coco coir pith has a naturally high cation exchange capacity — it holds potassium, calcium, and magnesium near the roots and releases them gradually, reducing nutrient runoff.

04
AIR + WATER

Balanced aeration and moisture

~80% air porosity keeps roots well oxygenated, while ~30% water retention maintains consistent moisture between irrigations — the most balanced ratio of any single-ingredient growing medium.

05
BLENDS EASILY

Mix with anything

Use standalone or blend with perlite, vermiculite, husk chips, or compost. The fine pith texture integrates evenly, making the popular 70/30 coir-to-perlite hydroponic blend easy to achieve.

How to Use

Open the bag. Fill. Plant. Done.

Loose coir is the most versatile format — use it standalone, blend with other substrates, or mix into soil. No hydration step is needed at any stage.

1

Loosen the coir

Open the bag and fluff the coir before use. Pre-expanded pith can settle slightly during shipping — a quick stir restores the full texture.

2

Mix if needed

Use standalone or blend with amendments. 70% coir + 30% perlite works well for hydroponics; 60% coir + 20% compost + 20% perlite suits soil-based growing.

3

Fill & plant

Fill pots, grow bags, trays, or raised beds directly, then plant seeds, seedlings, or cuttings. No settling period is needed.

4

Water & monitor

Water thoroughly on first use — coco coir re-wets easily with no dry spots. Monitor runoff EC on first irrigation and adjust your nutrient program accordingly.

Who It's For

Who uses Avee bulk loose coco coir pith

Potting

Potting mixes & soil blends

The most popular format for potting mix manufacturers and nurseries blending their own substrate. Consistent EC and pH batch to batch ensures reliable mix performance season after season.

Hydroponics

Hydroponics & soilless

Blend 70% loose coir with 30% perlite for a balanced hydroponic medium. Low EC, high CEC, and excellent re-wettability make it the preferred coco format for drip and recirculating systems.

Nursery

Nursery & propagation filling

Fill propagation trays, cell packs, and nursery pots directly from the bag with no hydration wait — a significant time saving at commercial scale.

Raised Beds

Raised beds & garden beds

Mix into raised beds to improve drainage, aeration, and water retention. 100% peat-free and OMRI-compatible — suited to certified organic vegetable and herb production.

Cannabis

Cannabis substrate blending

Use as the base medium for custom coco/perlite blends. The loose format allows precise chip-to-pith ratios, and 25kg bags are available for commercial-volume blending.

Mushroom

Mushroom & specialty crops

Triple-washed, heat-treated, pathogen-free coir pith is a popular casing layer and bulk substrate component for gourmet mushroom production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bulk loose coco coir pith — questions answered

The most common questions from Canadian, US, and Mexican growers. Don't see yours? Ask us directly.

What is the difference between loose coco coir pith and a compressed block? +
A compressed block needs 20–30 minutes of hydration and expands to 70–75 litres. Loose coir pith is already expanded — open the bag and use immediately. The loose format is preferred for nurseries and potting mix operations that need to fill containers without a hydration step.
How much volume does a 5kg bag of loose coir provide? +
Each 5kg bag provides approximately 50 litres (1.75 cubic feet) of ready-to-use growing medium. A 25kg bag provides approximately 250 litres. These volumes are pre-expanded, so no additional expansion occurs beyond normal moisture absorption.
Do I need to add Cal-Mag before using loose coir pith? +
Our loose coir is calcium-buffered at the factory — sodium has been displaced from the cation exchange sites before bagging. We recommend checking runoff EC and pH after the first irrigation, but a separate Cal-Mag soak isn't required. For cannabis, a light Cal-Mag top-up in early irrigation is common practice among Canadian LPs.
What is the best coir-to-perlite ratio for hydroponics? +
The most common ratio is 70% coco coir pith to 30% perlite, balancing moisture retention and drainage. High-frequency drip systems (cannabis, tomato) sometimes go to 60/40 for more drainage, while hand-watering setups often use 80/20 for more moisture retention between waterings.
Can loose coir pith replace peat moss in potting mixes? +
Yes — this is one of the most common applications. Coco coir pith matches peat's performance in moisture retention and air porosity, with better re-wettability, neutral pH, and renewable sourcing. Replace peat 1:1 by volume in most potting mix recipes with no adjustments needed.
Do you ship bulk loose coir pith to the USA and Mexico? +
Yes to the USA — we ship from our Cambridge, Ontario warehouse to all 50 states. Parcel courier handles 5kg and 10kg bags, while cross-border LTL freight covers 25kg and pallet orders. Mexico shipping lanes are expanding; contact us to confirm current availability and freight cost for your region.

Why nurseries are switching from peat to loose coir pith

Canada's peat resources face increasing regulatory scrutiny, and commercial nurseries and potting mix manufacturers are proactively transitioning to coco coir as their primary organic component. Loose coir pith matches peat's performance in every measurable category, and outperforms it in pH stability, re-wettability, and renewable sourcing credentials. For background on Canada's approach to peatland and wetland resource policy, see the Federal Policy on Wetland Conservation.
