Coco coir solutions for commercial berry growers

Berry systems can look similar from a distance, but strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries place different demands on the root zone. Avee reviews the crop, container, irrigation strategy and supply plan before proposing a commercial format.

Blueberries growing on a commercial berry plant
Container and protected-crop berry programmes should be specified around the actual crop cycle and irrigation system.
Different crops, different root zones

Do not treat every berry programme as one substrate

Start with the crop and production system. Crop duration, container geometry, irrigation and structural requirements differ enough that a copied “berry blend” can be misleading.

01 · STRAWBERRIES

Tabletop and gutter systems

Long-format or open-top bags are common. Uniform hydration, drainage layout and litres per plant should match the grower’s gutter and irrigation system.

02 · BLUEBERRIES

Long-cycle containers

Container-grown blueberries may need durable structure and aeration through a longer crop cycle. Chip distribution and container geometry should be validated before scale-up.

03 · OTHER BERRIES

Custom programme review

Raspberries and blackberries deserve their own review of container volume, crop duration, support system and irrigation—not a copied strawberry specification.

Turn a product direction into a controlled trial

Before a full order, define the trial and the records you will keep. Avee’s approach to quality and batch documentation explains which product details should be confirmed against the quoted material.

Send Avee these inputs

  • Berry crop, variety and production system
  • Container or bag dimensions and litres per plant
  • Crop duration and overwintering approach
  • Current substrate and desired change
  • Irrigation method, water quality and drainage strategy
  • Trial volume, annual quantity, destination and required date

Validate the quoted material

  • Confirm EC and pH test methods and applicable tolerances
  • Record hydration procedure, expansion and initial uniformity
  • Trial under your water, fertilizer and irrigation strategy
  • Monitor root-zone response across representative units
  • Approve packaging, quantity, availability and freight in writing
Frequently asked questions

Commercial berry substrate questions

Can strawberries and blueberries use the same blend?

Do not assume they need the same material. Crop duration, container geometry and the intended water-to-air balance can differ substantially.

Is a chip-heavy blend always better for blueberries?

No single particle ratio is automatically better. Container height, irrigation, pith fraction, compaction and crop duration should be considered together and tested in the grower’s system.

Can Avee make custom berry bags?

Custom dimensions, fill volumes, blend directions and hole layouts can be reviewed against expected order volume and manufacturing feasibility.

What should be measured in a berry trial?

Record hydration, expansion, uniformity, irrigation response, drainage, root development, crop health and physical stability over a representative period.
