Hydrating a coco coir brick is simple, but the way water is added affects how evenly the block expands. Pouring too quickly can leave a wet outer layer and a hard centre. Using far more water than needed can make handling messy and dilute the first runoff test.
For Avee’s 5kg compressed coco coir blocks, start with 20–25 litres of water, allow approximately 20 minutes, then loosen the expanded material. One block produces about 70–75 litres of ready-to-use substrate.
STEP 1
Place the block flat in a clean container. Do not use a tight bucket: the block expands in every direction and needs enough room to be turned and fluffed.
STEP 2
Distribute 20–25 litres over the top and sides instead of flooding one spot. Warm or ambient water can speed absorption. Avee’s blocks are pre-buffered, so plain water is sufficient for expansion; do not automatically add Cal-Mag during hydration.
STEP 3
The outside layers expand first. Let water travel into the centre before breaking the block apart. If a dry core remains after the first soak, add small amounts of water to that area rather than soaking the entire batch again.
STEP 4
Separate remaining compressed pieces by hand, fork or mixer. Fluffing restores pore space and distributes moisture. The finished material should feel evenly damp, loose and springy—not soupy or compacted.
STEP 5
For commercial, hydroponic or sensitive crops, check runoff EC and pH using the same method used by your operation. Avee’s 5kg blocks are specified at EC below 0.5 mS/cm and pH 5.5–6.5, but incoming-batch checks remain good production practice.
A fully expanded 5kg Avee block produces approximately 70–75 litres. That is enough for about seven 10-litre containers, fifteen 5-litre containers or one larger raised-bed blend requiring roughly 75 litres of coir. Allow for settling and the volume occupied by perlite, bark or other blend components.
Commercial operations needing repeated batches should standardize water volume, soak time and mixing equipment. For higher-volume substrate handling, compare bulk coir bales or pre-filled coco coir grow bags.
Frequently asked questions
Start with 20–25 litres for Avee’s 5kg block. Add water gradually and use small extra amounts only if a dry centre remains.
Allow approximately 20 minutes for a 5kg Avee block. Larger bales require more time and mechanical handling.
Not automatically. Avee’s blocks are calcium-buffered before shipping, so plain water is sufficient for expansion. Match later nutrition to the crop, water analysis and production program.
Use it promptly when possible. If it must be stored, keep it clean, covered and well aerated; avoid standing water and contamination from soil or tools.
Avee supplies single blocks, pallet quantities and container orders across Canada and the United States, with Mexico lanes expanding.
