Growing Tips · Volume Guide
Use container volume—not guesswork—to estimate blocks, bales or pre-filled grow bags for your next crop.
The easiest way to estimate coco coir is to calculate the total litres your containers or beds hold, subtract the volume supplied by other blend ingredients, then add a small handling allowance. Avee’s 5kg coco coir block expands to approximately 70–75 litres.
The basic formula
Then divide the coir portion by 70–75 litres per 5kg block. Round up to a whole block and add 5–10% when consistent fill depth is important.
| Project | Total volume | Approx. 5kg blocks |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 5L containers | 50L | 1 block |
| 20 × 10L containers | 200L | 3 blocks |
| 40 × 15L containers | 600L | 9 blocks |
| 100 × 20L containers | 2,000L | 28–29 blocks |
For a rectangular bed, multiply length × width × filled depth using metres, then multiply cubic metres by 1,000 to get litres. Example: a 2m × 1m bed filled 0.3m deep holds 600 litres. If coir is 50% of the blend, you need 300 litres of coir—about four to five 5kg blocks.

One Avee 5kg block expands to approximately 70–75 litres after hydration.
About 14–15 blocks, before adjusting for other blend ingredients and the handling allowance.
Use expanded volume for filling containers and beds. Compressed weight is useful for ordering and freight, not final fill volume.
