Why Switch

Why Canadian Growers
Are Choosing Coco Coir

Peat moss is destroying Canadian wetlands. Rockwool ends up in landfill. Coco coir is the renewable, high-performance alternative that's already powering the best greenhouse operations from Leamington to Vancouver.

100% Sustainable & Renewable
Made from coconut husk waste that would otherwise be discarded. No bogs destroyed, no landfill required. Composts directly into Canadian garden soil after 2–3 crop cycles.
Stable pH — No Lime Required
Coco coir naturally holds pH 5.5–6.8 — the ideal nutrient absorption range. Peat moss starts at pH 3.5 and requires lime corrections every season.
Reuses 2–3 Crop Cycles
Flush with enzymes, re-buffer, and replant. Each cycle dramatically reduces your cost-per-gram of output versus single-use rockwool or peat.
Superior Root Zone Aeration
High Air Filled Porosity (AFP) promotes explosive root development and precise crop steering — vegetative to generative on demand.

Canadian Growing Calendar

The Right Coir
at the Right Time

Canada's four seasons drive four different substrate strategies. Here's how to get the most from coco coir year-round.

Dec – Feb

Winter — Plan & Pre-Order

Lock in bulk pricing before spring demand. The best rates are available August–October, but winter is your last chance for pre-season stock.

Place bulk greenhouse orders — lock in pricing
Start indoor seeds with coir pellets & propagation cubes
Stock coir blocks in unheated warehouse (freeze-safe)
Plan substrate blends for spring crop calendar
Mar – May

Spring — Transplant & Establish

Ground thaws from Ontario to BC. Commercial greenhouse transplants move into grow bags. Outdoor beds get their coir amendment.

Hydrate 5kg blocks for raised beds & containers
Transfer commercial seedlings into grow bags
Amend clay Prairie soils with loose coir pith
Connect drippers to open top bags for Leamington tomato season
Jun – Aug

Summer — Peak Growth

Peak demand for water retention during Southern Ontario and Prairie heatwaves. Coir's moisture management keeps plants productive through July and August.

Mulch outdoor beds with coco husk chips — suppresses weeds
Monitor grow bag EC and run-off during peak heat
Reduce irrigation frequency in container gardens
Cannabis mid-season crop steering via dry-down management
Sep – Nov

Fall — Harvest & Prep

Commercial crops wrap up. Used coir gets cleaned and re-buffered for next season or composted into outdoor beds. Pre-season order window opens.

Flush and enzyme-treat used grow bags for reuse
Compost spent coir into outdoor Canadian garden beds
Place bulk pre-season orders at best pricing
Prep propagation setup for winter indoor grows

The Science

What Makes Avee Coir
Different

Not all coco coir is the same. Processing quality determines performance. Here's why every step in our supply chain matters to your crop.

01
Triple-Washing Removes Sodium

Coconut husks grow in coastal, salty environments and naturally contain high sodium and potassium. Raw, unwashed coir will burn young plants and interfere with nutrient uptake. Our triple-washing process removes excess salts before compression — giving you a genuinely clean substrate, not just a labelled one.

02
Calcium Buffering Prevents Lockout

Even washed coir has high Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) — it will steal calcium and magnesium from your nutrient solution if not buffered. We saturate all cation exchange sites with calcium nitrate before compression. The result: your Cal-Mag reaches your plants, not the medium. This is the step most cheap coir suppliers skip.

03
Air Filled Porosity for Root Health

Healthy roots need oxygen, not just water. Our chip-to-pith blend is engineered for the target Air Filled Porosity (AFP) of each crop — higher chips for cannabis and tomatoes that need fast dry-down and crop steering, higher pith for strawberries that need moisture retention. One formula does not fit all crops.

Common Questions

Questions From
Canadian Growers

Can I pick up locally in St. Catharines?

Yes — local pickup is available at our St. Catharines, Ontario warehouse. Call us at +1 (226) 444-4455 or email info@a-vee.com to arrange. Great option for Niagara Peninsula growers who want to inspect product before committing to a full season order.

Do you ship to residential addresses?

Yes. While we specialize in commercial bulk pallets, we ship smaller quantities and individual 5kg blocks to home gardeners via courier (FedEx/UPS/Purolator) across all Canadian provinces. A single 5kg block expands to approximately 75 litres of growing media — plenty for a home raised bed setup.

What's the difference between washed and buffered coir?

Washed coir has been rinsed to reduce EC (salt content). Buffered coir goes one step further — it's treated with calcium to displace sodium and potassium from the coir's cation exchange sites, preventing Cal-Mag deficiency in your plants. Buffered is always recommended for sensitive crops: tomatoes, cannabis, peppers, berries. All Avee products are both washed AND buffered.

Is coco coir good for amending Canadian clay soil?

Absolutely — it's one of the best uses for coco coir in Canada. Heavy clay soils (common in Ontario, Manitoba, and BC's Lower Mainland) compact easily and drain poorly. Working coir pith or husk chips into clay soil improves drainage, aeration, and root penetration immediately. Use our loose coir pith or husk chips at 20–30% by volume.

Can landscapers buy in bulk?

Yes — we offer pallet and container pricing for landscaping companies across Canada. Our jumbo coir bales are particularly popular for erosion control, site rehabilitation, and large-scale soil amendment projects. Contact us for a bulk project quote — we can arrange LTL freight to your site anywhere in Canada.

Does coco coir help during Canadian summer heatwaves?

Significantly. Coco coir holds 8–9 times its weight in water while still maintaining excellent aeration. During July and August heat events in Southern Ontario, the Prairies, and BC's Interior, coir-amended beds and container gardens require dramatically less frequent watering than soil or peat-based media. Mulching with coco husk chips also reduces evaporation and suppresses weeds.
