Why Root-Zone Structure Matters More at the Propagation Stage

A mature plant in a grow bag can tolerate a wider range of moisture and air-porosity swings than a cutting or plug can. At the propagation stage, the substrate has to hold enough moisture to keep a cutting from desiccating before it roots, while still moving enough oxygen through the root zone to prevent rot in the first two to three weeks. That balance is harder to hit in a cooler greenhouse environment, where lower ambient temperatures slow evaporation and can leave a poorly structured substrate waterlogged longer than it would be in a warmer climate.

Coco coir's fibre-to-pith ratio determines how it behaves under these conditions. Finer, pith-heavy material holds more water and suits seed starting and short-cycle propagation. Coco coir has a long, well-documented track record as a general horticultural growing medium. What is not well established is its performance as a containerized forest-seedling growing medium: published reviews of peat alternatives for reforestation nurseries list coir only as a material "gaining interest," citing isolated studies rather than adopted practice, and historical BC forest-seedling media trials we reviewed used peat/vermiculite as the standard with no mention of coir at all. We're stating this plainly rather than glossing over it.

What's the difference between a propagation cube and a fine-grade coco peat block for starting cuttings?

A propagation cube is pre-formed and pre-buffered to a consistent size and density, making it easier to standardize across a bench. A fine-grade block is compressed raw material you rehydrate and shape yourself — more flexible, but the consistency work is on your team.

Does coco coir need extra buffering for cold greenhouse propagation?

Buffering matters regardless of climate, but in a cooler greenhouse where irrigation and drying cycles run more slowly, an under-buffered substrate has more time to cause nutrient lockout before you notice it. Request our buffering specification before first use.

How does coco husk chip content affect drainage in a cooler root zone?

Higher chip content increases air porosity and speeds drainage, offsetting slower evaporation in cooler conditions. Blending in husk chips is one way to compensate without changing your irrigation schedule.

Is coco coir used in BC forest-seedling nurseries?

Not as standard practice today, as far as we can verify. Peat/vermiculite remains the conventional medium, and published research on coir for that use is limited to isolated studies. We can supply sample material for your own independent trial.

How long does compressed coco coir keep in storage before it needs to be used?

Compressed blocks and cubes are shelf-stable for extended periods when kept dry and out of temperature extremes — for northern operations stocking through winter, a temperature-stable, low-humidity storage area matters more than a hard expiry date.
