Why Coco Coir

Why Stables & Farms Across Canada & USA
Are Switching to Coco Coir Bedding

Wood shavings, straw, and peat moss have been the default for decades. Coco coir outperforms all of them on moisture control, dust, ammonia, and cost — and your horses will feel the difference in the first week.

01

Absorbs 8–10× Its Own Weight in Moisture

That is 2–3 times more than wood shavings and 4 times more than straw. Wet patches stay in one spot and do not spread through the whole bed. Spot-picking takes a fraction of the time. Your stall stays genuinely dry between changes, reducing the bacteria load that causes thrush and skin problems in horses that stand in wet bedding.

02

Virtually Zero Dust — Safer Air for Your Horses

Wood shavings and straw push fine particulate dust through your barn every time you fork them. For horses with heaves (RAO), COPD, or any respiratory sensitivity, this is a serious problem. Coco coir is sieved before packaging — no fine dust particles, cleaner air for horses and staff, and significantly reduced risk of respiratory flare-ups in sensitive animals.

03

Controls Ammonia and Reduces Flies by 90%

Coco coir naturally suppresses the bacteria that convert urea into ammonia. The result is noticeably better barn air quality within the first week of switching — and up to 90% fewer flies and mosquitoes compared to straw bedding. Fewer flies means less stress on your horses, less fly repellent product cost, and a cleaner environment for staff working in the barn daily.

04

Composts After Use — Complete Zero Waste

Coco coir is 100% organic and carries no pathogens. When your bed is spent, used coir and horse manure composts together into an excellent soil amendment that improves structure, water retention, and organic content in pasture or garden soil. Many stables across Ontario, BC, and the US Northeast partner with local market gardeners or greenhouse growers who collect the used bedding at no charge — eliminating your disposal cost entirely.

Setup Guide

How to Set Up Coco Coir
Horse Bedding in 5 Steps

1

Calculate Your Bales

Measure your stall. A 12×12 foot stall needs 5–6 bales for a full initial bed at 6–8 inches depth. A 10×10 needs 4 bales. A 14×14 needs 7–8 bales. Use the yield guide to the right to plan your first order and weekly top-up volume.

2

Expand the Bale

Place the compressed bale in the stall or a tub. Add approximately 4–5 litres of water per bale. Allow 10–15 minutes to fully expand. The bale will swell to 5× its compressed size. Break up any clumps with a fork.

Tip: For faster expansion in cold weather, use warm rather than cold water. Expansion time reduces from 15 to 8–10 minutes.
3

Spread and Level

Distribute the expanded coir evenly across the stall floor to 6–8 inches depth. Rake level. The surface is ready immediately — no drying time required. No machinery or special equipment needed, just a pitchfork.

4

Daily Spot-Picking

Wet patches stay localised with coco coir — they do not migrate through the bed like shavings. Remove soiled areas daily with a fork. Top up with 1–2 fresh bales per stall per week. Total mucking time per stall is typically 30–40% less than with wood shavings.

5

Compost the Spent Bedding

When the bed is fully spent, remove and add to your compost heap with horse manure. Used coco coir breaks down into premium organic soil amendment. Many stables arrange free collection by local greenhouse operators — zero disposal cost and zero landfill.

How It Works

Set Up in Three Simple Steps

No special equipment, no complicated process. A pitchfork and a water source is all you need.

1

Order the Right Amount

A 12×12 stall needs 5–6 bales for a full initial bed. A 10×10 needs around 4. Top up with 1–2 bales per stall each week. Compressed bales store in a fraction of the space of loose shavings — a full pallet fits in one barn corner.

2

Expand, Spread & Done

Add water to the bale — it expands to full volume in 10–15 minutes. Spread at 6–8 inches depth with a pitchfork. No mixing, no machinery, no mess. Ready to use immediately — no drying time required.

3

Spot-Pick Daily, Compost After

Wet patches stay localised — spot-picking is 30–40% faster than shavings. When the bed is spent, used coir and manure composts into excellent soil. Many stables give it free to local greenhouse growers and eliminate disposal costs entirely.

FAQ

Questions from Horse Owners
in Canada & the USA

The questions we hear most from stables and farms placing their first order.

Is coco coir actually better than wood shavings for horses?
Yes — and most stable operators who switch say they wish they had done it sooner. Coco coir absorbs 8–10 times its own weight in moisture versus 3–4 times for shavings. Wet patches stay localised rather than spreading through the whole bed, so spot-picking is faster and uses less bedding overall. There is no fine dust to trigger respiratory conditions. And because it naturally suppresses ammonia-producing bacteria, barn air quality improves noticeably within the first week.
How many bales do I need for my stalls?
A 12×12 foot stall needs 5–6 expanded bales for a full initial bed at 6–8 inches depth. A 10×10 stall needs about 4 bales. A 14×14 needs 7–8. For ongoing management, most stables top up with 1–2 bales per stall per week depending on the horse and season. Because bales are compressed 5:1, a full pallet stores in a very small footprint in your barn — expanding only when you need it.
How does coco coir compare to wood shavings for cost?
On a per-stall basis, coco coir is typically competitive with premium shavings and often lower cost once you account for the extended working life per bale and the reduction in labour time. Coco coir's superior moisture absorption means you use less material per week. When you buy by pallet or container at factory-direct wholesale pricing, the per-bale cost drops significantly below what retail feed stores charge for comparable shavings products.
Do you ship coco coir bales to the USA?
Yes. We ship from Cambridge, Ontario to equestrian farms across the USA — including Michigan, New York, Ohio, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and beyond. Because we are based in Ontario, we reach the entire US Northeast and Midwest significantly faster than US coir suppliers based in Texas or California. Contact us at info@a-vee.com or +1 (226) 444-4455 for US cross-border freight pricing.
Is coco coir bedding safe for horses with allergies or respiratory conditions?
Yes — it is one of the safest bedding choices for sensitive horses. Coco coir is hypoallergenic, contains no chemical treatments or synthetic additives, and produces virtually no fine dust. It is an excellent choice for horses with heaves (RAO), COPD, or any respiratory sensitivity. The natural pH of 5.8–6.8 also discourages bacterial and fungal growth that can aggravate skin conditions such as rain rot or dermatitis.
What do I do with the used bedding?
Used coco coir mixed with horse manure composts into an excellent soil amendment — improving structure, water retention, and organic matter in pasture or garden soil. Many stables in Ontario, BC, and the US Northeast partner with local market gardeners or greenhouse operators who collect the used bedding free of charge. This completely eliminates your disposal cost and turns a waste stream into a community resource.
Is coco coir bedding safe for cattle, poultry, and other livestock?
Yes. Coco coir carries no pathogenic agents and is 100% organic — making it safe for cattle, dairy cows, pigs, poultry, goats, and sheep. It meets hygiene standards for certified organic livestock operations in Canada and the USA. The dust-free surface reduces respiratory issues in confined poultry and swine operations, and its natural ammonia suppression benefits all livestock housing.
How does wholesale pricing work?
We offer factory-direct pricing on pallet and container-load orders with no distributor or middleman markup. Because we source and stock directly, we can offer prices that local feed store resellers simply cannot match at equivalent quality. Contact us at info@a-vee.com or WhatsApp +1 (226) 444-4455 for a wholesale quote. We respond to all enquiries within 24 hours.
